First comes love, then comes marriage…then comes Susie with the baby carriage?
Not so for the millions of couples in North America who have chosen to remain childless; who have determined that when it comes to their family—two is enough.
Why are more and more couples opting out of parenthood?
Filmmaker Laura Scott, 43, married and childless by choice, embarks on a journey of discovery to explore the motivations and decision-making processes of those who are living or considering a “childfree” life. As she travels the U.S. and Canada to interview childfree couples, she hears stories of love, vasectomies, stigma, societal pressure, an international childfree social club, and documents the decision making of two undecided couples who are struggling to make the right choice for themselves.

From the Producer:
January 22, 2010--We're planning to resume editing next month after a holiday hiatus. Editing is tough. I think we've probably edited five or six versions so far. The first was a very rough assemblage just to see how things look in a very raw state.
A documentary film is not like your typical Hollywood narrative film. You don't start with a script with dialogue. Your participants tell the story and the script comes later. We used storyboards once we had the scenes roughed out and edited and then we move the scene cards around to find the best placement. The goal is find the right pacing, keep the audience engaged, and create a compelling story structure. Some things that work on paper don't work on video and then it's back to the drawing board.
February 13, 2010-- I was in NC this week working with editor Jim Haverkamp. I'm really impressed with what he has done to improve the rough cut of the Childless by Choice documentary. Now I think we can call it a fine cut. There's still work to be done with transitions and we need to work on the music but it is slowly coming together. Jim is headed to Mexico for another film project but we will resume editing in April.
April 12, 2010 -- Working with Bruce the composer to create some original music for the Childless by Choice documentary. Also had a great time at the Full Frame Documentary festival in Durham, NC learning about hybrid distribution and watching some great films.
June 14, 2010 -- Into final cut of the Childless by Choice Project Documentary. Still a few more things to do before we begin to "finish" the film. Finishing the film includes the audio sweetening and color correction and grading that you need to do to achieve that polished smooth look and sound we've come to expect from films. Also exploring options for educational distribution.
July 15, 2010 -- Doing the final editing tweeks and working on the extra features for the DVD. I can finally see the end of the tunnel!
August 6, 2010 -- The finishing of the film starts next week. Color Grading and audio work is left to the experts. It's amazing how many people it takes to make a film, even a small budget film like The Childless by Choice Project documentary. As producer, now I put on the marketing hat. There is lots of work to do!
